The YearsAbroad.com Handbook

What's a year abroad?

Being enrolled at a British university doesn't necessarily mean completing your studies in Britain. Many degree programmes offer the opportunity to spend anything from a semester to an academic year in a foreign country, working in one way or another towards your degree.

Getting the most out of a year
It should be clear already that a year abroad isn't a 'gap year' : at the end of the year, you'll be asked to show how you've used the time to work productively towards your degree.

Depending on your university or degree, a year abroad might be a compulsory part of your modern or European languages degree, an optional exchange with a foreign university, or the opportunity of an internship in business abroad.

A year abroad is a fantastic opportunity to try something new. Living, working and studying abroad will show and teach you things you wouldn't otherwise experience by following a normal three-year degree.

Your confidence, independence and communication skills will all get a boost and, depending on where you travel to, you’ll gain another perspective on your subject and possibly pick up another language on the way.

There are, however, a few stumbling blocks along the way. Fortunately, almost every problem can be solved. The bizarre thing is that it's often harder than it should be to get accurate and comprehensive advice when planning a year abroad, because British universities rarely share their students' feedback with outsiders. Why?!

At YearsAbroad.com, we aim to bring together students' advice and opinions on all things 'year abroad' so that you can get the full picture when planning your year abroad.

Everybody's year abroad should be amazing, the highlight of their time at university.
By sharing advice, reviews and recommendations, we hope this Handbook will help students to choose a destination, decide whether to study or work, and to get something truly amazing from their degree, beyond simply a qualification.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the Handbook, to the site, and to the project.
